We Take Requests

Not O.P. Alex!!!

This was in my personal email from an anonymous family member...

Thinking of music questions, B----'s favorite to ask on first dates and uncomfortable conversations is what was your first concert? Not one your parents dragged you to (Kenny Rogers) but the one you picked out or begged to go to? The beauty is it will never change, it has a date and says something, he's met people that hadn't gone to their first show till their 20's, mine was Powerstation w/ OMD opening.

For me it was the 1977 Texas Jam:
Fleetwood Mac
Steve Miller Band
Little River Band

First Arena Show:
George Benson when he was considered "Pop"

First Show I bought tickets for was U2 War.
Unfortunately my memory of it has blended in with the Red Rocks concert video!!

Mine was a Simon and Garfunkel reunion. One of my closest friends, Dick Morton and I used to listen to the Concert in Central Park again and again and again and just after he graduated high school, he and Aaron Meisinger and I think Mary O'Meara and I all drove up to DC and pushed to the front and sang along with every song (except whatever the one from Garfunkel's solo album was). Because we. were. not. cool.

Sigh. Not seeing the Pixies is one of the great sadnesses of my life. They never came here.

My first show was the B-52s, Cosmic Planet tour I assume. I was 12. My 18 year old cousin took me and went down into the front row with a tight button-up blouse. Bad mistake. By the end of one song her boobs were hanging out.

First one I went to under my own steam was probably the Headless Chickens (NZ band with a kind of Sugarcubes vibe - cool-sounding chick, annoying-sounding dude) when I was 15 or so, 1991ish. I had to use a fake ID, which stood me in good stead for the next five years...

I remember getting very excited to see the Who farewell tour (it was the first farewell tour of many I think) at the astrodome! 1982/3. Billy Squier was opening and that was the big surpries my mom was so excited for me to see - i loved him soooooo. BUT were late and missed him. (thank you! goodnight!) my mom did flrit with a security guy and we got a great view to the side of the stage in an area that was blocked off. it did rock.

This is good and embarrassing...

I grew up in the the Rio Grande Valley, and there were no real live music opportunities.

The first concert I attended was also the first I bought my own ticket for. I was 18 and had just moved to Austin.

EMF at the Austin Opera House. It was unbelievable.
